| My artist’s statement contains the sentence “My goal is accomplished when friends and strangers engage in a visual conversation with my work.” The combination of the words visual and conversation ignited the idea of engaging in a conversation with another artist. The process I envisioned involved one individual giving an original work of art to another artist to produce a visual response. The visual response would then be returned along with the original for the first artist to answer the response. Medium, style, subject and size of the pages would be the decision of the artists. We did agree to exchange no words about the art as the work was delivered. There are currently four artists participating in this effort to move beyond words in communication. The conversations posted here are between myself, Marni Lawson and Susan Pomeroy. The “visual conversation” process encourages the exploration of creative thought and expression so well, the participants believe the concept must be shared. Choosing a direction and creating an image is an adventure. We have chosen to post some of our conversations to date as portfolios on the Gallery website. They will be updated as more chapters are “written.” An elementary school computer teacher, Cheryl Oakes, is using the conversations with her grade 1 through 4 students. They have created their own responses to pieces of our conversations with a computer program and these works of art can be viewed by visiting the Wells Elementary School web site at: http://wocsd.org/wes |
